INDEPENDENT TEXANS BACK JAWORSKI

Group Says Challenger Offers Opportunity to Put People First and Politics Last

(GALVESTON) — The state’s leading organization of independent voters today enthusiastically endorsed Joe Jaworski for the Texas Senate, saying that the former Galveston Mayor Pro-Tem offers voters a unique opportunity to put people over politics and help cut through the partisan dysfunction that has left too many challenges unaddressed by top elected leaders in Austin.

“The State Capitol is desperate for an independent voice and a new direction,” said Linda Curtis, founder and executive director of Independent Texans, the state’s leading group of independent and ticket-splitting voters. “Joe Jaworski has the vitality and vision to answer that call.”

Curtis co-founded Independent Texans in 2001 to represent the growing movement of voters who call themselves independent, estimated to number approximately 4.2 million Texans (http://www.indytexans.org/). She said, “Joe gets the connection between the need for political reform on redistricting and the Trans-Texas Corridor/toll-way schemes of the current administration. He also understands that you can’t get energy independence – something upon which all Texans, regardless of their political affiliations, agree – through a polluted political process. This gives Joe the right to call himself an independent Democrat.”

Jaworski’s family has been active in public service for decades, including his grandfather, respected Watergate prosecutor Leon Jaworski, and his father, Joe, a former partner in the prestigious Houston law firm of Bracewell & Patterson, and founder of the American Leadership Forum and co-founder of the Global Leadership Initiative.

Jaworski served three terms on the Galveston City Council, the last as Mayor Pro-Tem. He earned a reputation for strict financial accountability and praise for helping lead the area’s emergency preparation for Hurricane Rita..

A member of the board of directors of the Children’s Center in Galveston and the University of Texas Medical Branch’s Community Service Excellence Committee, Jaworski was appointed to UTMB’s BSL-4 Community Liaison Committee, a group of local leaders charged with strengthening communication between the institution and the community about the university’s infectious disease research program and high-containment laboratories.

Jaworski practices mediation and maritime law and lives in Galveston with his wife, Rebecca, and their two children.
